Sustainability at Lysebu

Sustainable Hotel Operations - Eco-Lighthouse

At Lysebu, sustainability is not a project. It is an attitude. A natural extension of the place we are a part of. With views over Nordmarka and access to deep forests, fresh mountain air, and pure springs, it feels natural to care for our surroundings. Sustainability is at the heart of the entire experience at Lysebu. Whether you visit us to enjoy a meal, a conference, or a quiet moment in nature, you can be sure that we take our responsibility seriously.

Lysebu has been Eco-Lighthouse certified since 2012 and has led the way in developing a hotel experience with a lower climate footprint for many years – without compromising on quality. Lysebu aims to contribute to a more sustainable society and therefore takes responsibility for our environmental impact. An important part of this work is being Eco-Lighthouse certified. This means we have established a team that manages our climate and environmental efforts and helps us with continuous improvement. The certification also includes specific requirements that must be met regarding the working environment, waste/reuse, energy, procurement, and transport. Every year, we report figures for our activities which result in climate accounts, as well as results and statistics.

Environmental Practices

For us, sustainability is more than just fine words. We work concretely and purposefully with energy consumption, waste, resource management, and procurement. In 2023, we took a significant green step by investing in geothermal heating – a renewable and highly energy-efficient heating solution that provides consistent warmth year-round. Geothermal heating reduced the hotel’s total energy consumption by a full 40% in the first year. This is significant and makes our operations more robust, climate-friendly, and future-oriented. This transition marks an important shift where we invest in solutions that not only work today but will also remain strong for decades to come.

We use eco-friendly cleaning products and sort waste throughout the entire operation, ensuring our resources are utilized as responsibly as possible. We handle resources with care.

We repair our furniture instead of discarding it – our own staff lovingly and precisely refurbish chairs, tables, and cabinets. Each repair extends their lifespan and reduces the need for new production. When we need something new, we search for pre-owned treasures on FINN. Here, we find quality furniture with soul and history, which are given new life with us. This contributes to both less waste and a more personal atmosphere.

Kitchen Garden and Local Flavors

Lysebu cultivates its own herbs, berries, shrubs, and the exclusive Valdres garlic. With our own kitchen garden and greenhouse, we serve short-travelled and seasonal flavors – directly from soil to table.

We also have our own beehives and harvest honey directly from the nature around us. This not only adds flavor to breakfast but also contributes to increased biodiversity in the area.

Responsible Restaurant

At Lysebu Restaurant, we let the seasons guide the menu. We let nature shape our menus. We create experiences that not only last – but make a lasting difference.

We collaborate with local producers and choose organic whenever possible. Here, the food is genuine, made from scratch, and packed with flavors from the local area. Locally sourced, conscious, and honest.

Green Conference – with Purpose

We were the first in Oslo to offer green conferences, and today we go even further. “Lysebu’s Green Conference” is a package you can get with 100% vegetarian food, green energy, eco-friendly cleaning, and locally sourced flavors. It is possible to meet with purpose – and at the same time leave a meaningful impact.

Guests Play a Role

We also invite our guests to participate in the green shift. It’s not about grand sacrifices, but small choices: hanging up towels for reuse, turning off lights when leaving, sorting bottles and waste. Together, we can reduce the impact without diminishing the experience.

Additionally, we encourage our guests to explore the nature around us and choose activities that promote sustainable use of the area – whether it’s hiking trails, skiing, or tranquil nature experiences in the immediate vicinity.

Social Sustainability and Transparency

We take human rights and decent working conditions seriously. Lysebu complies with the Transparency Act and annually publishes a report on how we ensure ethical operations internally and with our suppliers. We also expect our partners to meet the same requirements.
